Packing Your Pack

Tips

Packing OrderWhen loading a large-volume pack for a backpacking trip (on-trail or off), the goal is to raise the center of gravity. The best way to do this is to stow your sleeping bag in the lower compartment of your pack, and keep liquids and lighter items near the top.

Foam MatsA closed-cell foam mat takes up a large amount of space when stored inside your pack. Since it does not absorb water, stow it on the outside of the pack using the accessory straps.

TentsTents are best carried inside the pack, upright and near your back. If the poles for the tent are too long, zip away part of the compartment divider for extra space, or store them outside of the pack using the side compression straps.
